With Further Ado #409: The Sonic Days of Scott Shaw!

Have you ever had that strange feeling when you don’t know much about a book’s subject —and don’t even have a little affinity for it—but you absolutely love that book?

Me too! That’s the case (for me) with the wonderful new hardcover, Scott Shaw!’s Sonic Days. I’m not a big Sonic the Hedgehog fan. I’m not sure if I’m too old, too young, or too square. It just never was my cup of tea. I don’t really get it. Although I’m in awe of the enduring staying power of this IP.

On the other hand, I am a Scott Shaw! fan. He’s an impressive guy who’s accomplished so much. Even his early days, as one of the gang of local fans who started San Diego Comic-Con (now officially called Comic-Con International) is important to the pop culture in general.  ( I had a conversation with the See You At San Diego author back in “With Further Ado” #226.)

A bit of full disclosure, Scott contributes a wonderful column in every issue of RetroFan Magazine, a publication of which I’m proud to be Editor-in-Chief.

This new book, Sonic Days, gathers together all of Scott’s clever Sonic adventures. They are all look great and have such a charm. How can they not? After all, Scott has had, and has, an A-list career in comics, animation, and advertising.

The book works best for me because I like to learn how the sausage is made. Scott’ s introduction expertly pulls back the curtain to allow us all an opportunity to understand what it’s like for an artist to working on a hot property like Sonic. As always, Scott doesn’t pull any punches. He’s a real “calls ‘em as he sees ‘em” kind of guy, and that come through here too. In spades.

Of note: the foreword by Patrick Luque sets the stage very well. And the back matter is fascinating too.

It’s a fun book, and I wholeheartedly recommend it for the Sonic fans (and non-fans like me) out there!
