When was the last time you read one of those year-end roundups and concluded “Hey, this year was damn good! Let’s do it one more time!”

Well, this isn’t it. Being a realist is a bitch. Because this place is called “Pop Culture Squad” and because my brain no longer possesses the bandwidth to reflect upon all of Earth’s currently crippling traumas, I will restrict my comments to on-topic affairs.

Over at the comics rack, when it comes to new material DC Comics and Marvel Comics have pretty much abandoned giving us stories and have focused their energies on events that are as humongous as they are repetitive and meaningless. Both imprints have given us some great writing here and there, often in the form of stand-alone stories and mini-series that are completely outside the framework. Perhaps the authors also can’t fathom these overpopulated jamborees.

Each month Marvel continues to pump out more and more spiders, and I include their symbiotes. Over at DC Batman has become such a relentless asshole he can run for president on the 2028 GOP ticket. Even his massive family mocks him. If not for Lois Lane, Wonder Woman, and the just-cancelled Birds of Prey, I’d restrict my DC reading to old copies of Scribbly. Soon to be a television series produced and showrunner by Ryan Murphy and premiering on FX this fall, the smash-hit comic The Beauty returns to comic shops with a brand-new volume.

Set in a world not unlike our own, The Beauty chronicles what happens when a new sexually transmitted disease begins to spread. Only, this is a disease that people actually want, as those who contract it are literally changed into more beautiful versions of themselves. The only hitch is a slight fever and, eventually, death. But isn’t that an easy price to pay to be gorgeous?

This new series follows several characters as they deal with the Beauty and how it has changed society around them. A thief for hire on a dangerous job, a meteorologist with plummeting ratings, and special agents specializing in Beauty-related crimes will all find their lives converging in unexpected ways. And some fan favorite characters from the original series will return, as well.

The Beauty is written by co-creators Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, and this time around they are joined by superstar artist Ema Lupacchino (World’s Finest: Teen Titans) for an intriguing morality play that blends crime, horror, and action for a comic book unlike any other.

The main covers for this series are by Haun and colorist Nick Filardi (Powers)!

Release Date: October 29, 2025

PCS NOTES: A fan favorite series returns from a new and exciting publisher just in time for it to make its transition to a live-action series. Can’t wait.

Welcome to our latest Rapid Reviews column. We are excited to talk about these three new number ones. They have some things in common; one of those things is they have a female lead character whose personal sense of self is challenged by the outside world. Each one of them is presented with different obstacles and approach those challenges in ways unique to their circumstances. We enjoyed all of these first issue. Read below to find out why and let us know what you think if/when you read them.

PCS Review:

What at fantastic start to this highly anticipated series. Let’s talk about the concept for a second. This is the story of a woman who sacrifices her freedom and wellbeing to protect her family while maintaining a façade of subservience, despite a core belief that goes against that subservience. The power dynamics that are at play are masterfully orchestrated by both writer and artist for maximum evocation of compassion for the protagonist. We are immediately “Ride or Die” with Marian.

Joe (Jose) Jaro and Walter Baiamonte combine to craft a spectacular visual narrative that has a gorgeous anime-like feel. In particular there is a sequence in the middle of the book involving a fire that is, well.. “fire”.

The exploration of faith as a concept and religion as structure is on display in this tale. Tini Howard it tackling some heavy themes, and we are here for every panel of it.
