Everything We Read This Week – 02/06/2019

Welcome back to Everything We Read This Week.  This is the place that we make our weekly trip through this week’s pull-list. It features mostly spoiler-free brief analysis and commentary of each book.

This was a fantastic week for comic books. There were some very high quality books out there for all types of readers. There were some great new series that started and a couple that ended. Remember to find what you like, GO OUT AND FIND SOME COMICS TO READ!! They are good for you.

We reviewed books from DC, Marvel, Image, Ahoy, Dark Horse, and Dynamite this week. As always, we hope you might find what we say interesting enough to try some of these comics.

Also, Don’t forget to check our hotlist of new books debuting this month over here. You will see books that we were looking forward to with the designation Hot #1 by them. There are a few of them out this week and they are really good.

DISCLAIMER:

There is a 4 star rating system. It is simple and not to be taken too seriously as everyone gets their own impressions of art. These ratings are just to give our readers an idea of what we thought of the book, and they will be on the generous side normally. So don’t expect to see a lot of 1 Stars. After all, it’s not often that you have a bad book on your pull-list.

The rating system is as follows:

Great

 Good

 OK

 Not Good

Also look for the book we deemed Favorite Book of the Week. It is the comic that we like the most this week. The criteria are difficult to pin down, but suffice to say it is a book that moved us.

And here are the books we read in alphabetical order:

With Further Ado #028: Submitted for Approval

With Further Ado #028: Submitted for Approval

Imagine a place and time where experts share their love and knowledge of every pop culture topic dear to them.  Now imagine you couldn’t find an expert on that one corner of pop culture you need to learn more about. There’s a signpost up ahead – next stop, the Twilight Zone.

That’s only fitting.  I’ve been trying to find an expert on Twilight Zone comics, and I keep coming up empty-handed.

It’s important for this big project I’m working on. This March 23 and 24th at ITHACON (the Ithaca Comic Convention), we’ll be celebrating the life and works of Rod Serling. You probably know him as the creator and host of the Twilight Zone, but he’s so much more. And he was a professor at Ithaca College, where they maintain his archives.  We’re going to display these amazing treasures for fans at ITHACON.  That will be a special treat as we also celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Twilight Zone.

There’s a lot of Twilight Zone authors and experts, but everyone seems to ignore the comics.

YEAR IN REVIEW: Best New Ongoing Comic Series of 2018

YEAR IN REVIEW: Best New Ongoing Comic Series of 2018

Welcome to the second “Year In Review” post for 2018. As we end our first year of existence, we at PopCultureSquad.com want to take a moment and recognize some of the great comic books that we seen this year. The first YIR post highlighted the best Limited Series of the year, and you can find it here.

In this post, we will take a look at the best new ongoing series that debuted in 2018.  Due to the marketing and economics of modern comics. Many series are rebooted to a new number when there is a change the creative team, and we try not to include those as new ongoing series. For example, the primary superhero team books re-launched for both Marvel and DC this year, but they are not included on this list. They are both fine series for the most part, but we are looking for exceptional innovation here.

This category has a very good mix publishers that contributed some very good new series. The publishers that are represented in the list include DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Image Comics, Boom! Studios, Dynamite Entertainment, a, and Abstract Studios. We are not going to rank the series against each other. The purpose is to highlight what we felt was special this year, not to disparage or point out were things came up short.

Here is the list in alphabetical order:
