With Further Ado #115: The Sprawling MetaVerse of a Virtual Comic Con & the Simple Joy of an Old Comic Story

The best part about conventions, for me, is that they that they transcend commerce and blow past marketing to blossom into big parties where you spend time with old friends and make new ones (who all share the same pop culture interests).

Days gone by…

New York Comic Con was held virtually this past weekend. I was surprised how nostalgic so much of fandom and the industry was for “the good old days”.  And I was surprised how much I missed it.  Make no mistake, I had so much fun there for so many years, but I didn’t expect to be sappy about it. I thought the ache of my feet and the crush of the crowds was still fresh in my mind, but as time floats by we tend to forget all the crummy aspects of things and just remember all the cool parts.

Hats off to Reed Expo’s Mike Armstrong, Lance Fensterman, Larry Settembrini, Mark Fitch and their merry band who pulled this all together. This 2020 NYCC virtual convention, also branded as Find the Metaverse,  had some very interesting parts.  The exhibition floor was, by and large, a pretty straightforward conversion to an online version. Certain companies, like BlueFin, created incredible virtual booths where attendees could roam freely…and discover treasures. New Number Ones for the Week of June 3, 2020

New Number Ones for the Week of June 3, 2020

Welcome Back to NEW NUMBER ONES! New comics are BACK!!!

If you are new here, this column is designed to bring you reviews of new comic book series that came out this week. We will try to focus on independent and original series for the most part. This week we have four books for you. They are from Archie Comics, Dynamite Entertainment, and Image Comics.

You will usually find the books that we review in this space on our month list of New Number Ones. As the distribution of new comics is still getting underway, expect a monthly look ahead for July’s new series.

The books this week are all returns of well-known properties, but eminently worthwhile. They have been out of publication for a while, but we are glad they are all back.

This week we will bring you our thoughts on four books: The Boys: Dear Becky #1, Nailbiter Returns #1, Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Death of Nancy Drew #1, and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch: Something Wicked #1

Check out the reviews below in alphabetical order:

The Boys: Dear Becky #1
Dynamite Entertainment
Written by Garth Ennis
Art by Russ Braun
Colors by Tony Aviña
Letters by Simon Bowland
Cover Art by Darick Robertson

The Boys are back. Garth Ennis returns to the property that has now become hit Amazon series, and it is a good thing. This first issue of the new series reminds readers that The Boys has long been known as a book that pushes the limits of polite discussion to the side and lays bare all the dark sides of humanity that we don’t want to think about. This book jumps right in and challenges the reader’s sensibilities in a way that doesn’t feel like outrageousness for outrageousness’ sake. Russ Braun returns to the art duties, and his storytelling and character depictions are fantastic, as usual. Tony Aviña on colors and Simon Bowland on letters round out an excellent creative team that delivers a wonderful return for The Boys. Continue reading “New Number Ones for the Week of June 3, 2020”

Brainiac On Banjo #029: Ahoy There, Mr. Christ!

Brainiac On Banjo #029: Ahoy There, Mr. Christ!

If you’ve been to a comic book shop lately or you’ve thumbed through a recent Diamond Distributors catalog, no doubt you’ve noticed there are a hell of a lot of viable-looking, professionally-operated new publishers around who are doing some very interesting projects. You’ve also noticed there are far too many new projects for you to check out. Or, perhaps, you’re tired of hearing your credit card scream every time you go to the comics shop.

Lucky for Ahoy Comics, one of the better new imprints to come down the pike in the past couple years, our friends at DC Comics just gave them one hell of a promotional boost.

DC had this six-issue project called The Second Coming, by Mark Russell and Richard Pace – which, alone, should be enough to get you to check it out. It’s about Jesus Christ, his superhero roommate Sunstar, and his reactions towards contemporary society. As Russell told the New York Times he was telling a story about how we have “fetishized physical violence and force as being the solution to every problem.” OK, that’s a valid pitch for this satirical series which, clearly, was not intended to be the gospel truth, or a replacement or a revision of same.

DC solicited the first couple issues before word got out to the various hate groups such as the Christian Broadcasting Network, Citizen Go, Christian Headlines, and Fox News. Just because you throw around the word “Christian” does not mean you aren’t a hater, and these groups and their fellow travelers quickly organized petitions urging its cancellation and threatening a boycott of DC.
