With Further Ado #326: The Annual With Further Ado Annual Gift Guide – Part 4

It’s getting to be kind of last minute, isn’t it? I’m not judging you, though. I think it’s fun to shop at the last minute! With that in mind, let’s take one more bit out of the Gift Guide apple this week:

Frazetta: World’s Best Comics Cover Artist

I talked about this one recently, but wanted to include it in WFA’s Annual Gift Guide. There have been a lot of Frank Frazetta books published over the years, and this one is unique as it focuses on the classic imagery and enduring impact of Frazetta’s comic covers. It’s J. David Spurlock’s new book – Frazetta, the World’s Best Comics Cover Artist. I tend to just love —and gush over—the books that Vanguard publishes.

The Rocketeer Collector Pin Set

I’m hip deep into Dave Stevens’ Rocketeer, as we’re creating a new Rocketeer Uniform Set for Captain Action. I’ve only talked about it a little here, but if you want to see it check it out here.

As a part of this project, it’s fun to see what all the other licensees are up to. I stumbled across the Okkto folks at San Diego Comic-Con and was so impressed with their booth and their merchandise. I got a pin and a Bettie sticker too. The quality was top-notch.

And I just ordered their collectible pin set. It just arrived and it’s fantastic. I wear a lot of sport coats when I’m teaching, and I think I’m going to be wearing these on my lapel quite a bit!

And you know what? They’ve got a sale going right now. This item is usually $50 bucks, but it’s only $30 right now.

Here’s the official write-up:

Okkto is thrilled to reveal our brand new, limited edition Collector’s Pin Sets celebrating The Rocketeer comic book! Designed in collaboration with our friends at MacGuffin Goods, each box set includes five new and exclusive Rocketeer pins pulled straight from Dave Stevens’s comic book art:
• “Cliff’s First Flight”
• “The Rocket-Pack” (complete with 3D transparent ruby red “jewel”)
• “The Rocketeer Logo”
• “The Blind Bulldog / Gee Bee”
• “The Bulldog Cafe”
The pins come packaged display-ready in a premium 5” gift box with a magnetic flap. Available as both a gold / color version and a more limited silver / black & white “Artist’s Edition”.

With Further Ado #322: My Head’s in the Clouds… with the Rocketeer

Every once in a while, someone will say to me that while they appreciate the way I shine the spotlight on all the cool stuff going on in pop culture (here in With Further Ado), they also want to know what I’m up to!

Lately, my head’s been in the clouds – with Dave Stevens’ The Rocketeer!

Back in the summer, at Shelton Drum’s HeroesCon, I was surprised to see so many dealers selling Dave Stevens comics, including his signature series, The Rocketeer, at high prices. I guess I missed the memo. I didn’t know there was a frenzy. Fans sure seem into Dave Stevens’ comics, books and art.

  • Maybe they went to that Dave Stevens San Diego Comic-Con Museum Show in 2022? I did, with Elissa and Krista Rozanski, and loved it.
  • Maybe they saw the recent documentary Dave Stevens: Drawn to Perfection from last year? My wife Kathe and I saw it and really liked it!
  • Maybe fans have just come to fully appreciate Dave Stevens’ skillfully lush ink lines?
  • Maybe they are enjoying the ongoing IDW Publishing new Rocketeer Adventures comic books? The Rocketeer Breaks Free is the latest iteration. Stephen Mooney and Staz Johnson are doing fine work!

Who knows? Whatever the reason, I get it! I’ve been a fan ever since Bill Schanes first published those Pacific Comics Presents comics introducing us all to The Rocketeer. So. it’s probably not a surprise to you all that I’ve got two Rocketeer projects I’m working on: Continue reading “With Further Ado #322: My Head’s in the Clouds… with the Rocketeer” →
