Lots to cover this week. Let’s jump in!
Sticking the Reboot
I’ve been enjoying Dan Slott’s Superman Unlimited quite a bit. Superman appears in several ongoing titles these days, and each has its own vibe. Superman Unlimited isn’t a total reboot, but it is re-imagining some aspects of the mythology a little bit differently. It makes me feel like a kid in the early ‘70s, when Clark started working in broadcasting and there was no more kryptonite.
Fans have been trained that when writers come up with new bold new ideas, they will probably get undone at some point. That’s the price you pay working on a corporations IP, I guess.
But in this recent issue, Dan Slott and Lucas Meyer seem to be looking to unwind the recent developments (from the Bendis era) involving Superman’s son, Jon Kent. And they’ve figured out a brilliant way so it of makes sense. Will it stick? Beats me. But kudos to everyone who stretched their creativity to come up with an idea that still plays by the rules.
A quick word about Lucas Meyer. He’s a phenomenal artist. He’s got a command of figures, of action/movement of inking, and especially of page layout. Reading this book is a like taking a master class entitled “how to layout a comic and not let anyone notice how well you are doing it“.
UFO’s + the new 100% Human-Made Certification
AHOY Comics is rolling out the 100% Human-Made certification on the new project, The Forgotten Divine. Matt Kindt created this concept and I’m so excited that AHOY is the first company to embrace it.
The Forgotten Divine, written by Mark Russell and illustrated by Russ Braun, is graphic novel about a bunch of people who have visions of far-away worlds.
This is the official synopsis:
The Forgotten Divine is a sci-fi drama bout Rodney Coleman, an unhoused veteran whose sleep is haunted by dreams of a faraway planet. (At least, he thinks they’re dreams.) Soon Coleman connects with other plagues by dream of the same world and find himself head of a UFO cult. The group’s shared effort to understand their vision is heartfelt at first—but over time it descends into unreality, conspiracy, paranoia, violence, and conceivably…revelation.
Check out The Forgotten Divine Kickstarter here! I just did (and I selected the level with a Matt Bors cover). It looks to be another fantastic read.
The Lazarus Prophecy of 60 Minutes
I stumbled across an old issue of Lazarus the other day. I have been enjoying the series immensely, and I’m really excited that Rucka and Lark are in the final laps around the track now.
This issue Lazarus X+66 #5 was published almost 10 years ago. I know, I know – tempus fugit. But here’s the thing: like so many elements of this outstanding series, it’s prescient. The opening of this issue could very well be a commentary of Bari Weiss and all the astoundingly awful 60 Minutes drama from just last week.
NEXT WEEK
For the 400th installment of With Further Ado, I’m heading down to Charlotte for the amazing HeroesCon convention run by Shelton Drum. He, and his team, always do a fantastic job.
I’ll be on the TwoMorrows Panel and the RetroFan panel – hope to see you at both of them! Can’t wait.
Oh, I’ll also be visiting two grandchildren, and brainwashing/spoiling theme with comics related gifts. That’ll be fun too. More details in the 400th.
