A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about my love of red comic book covers. Why? I dunno. Red was the color of my alma mater. Maybe that’s it? I think the simple answer is that when I was a kid, there were just a lot of cool covers that were red. Here’s a few more:
The Brutal Dark – I’m enthralled by Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips’ new series from Vertigo – The Peril of the Brutal Dark. But then again, I’m a sucker for detective novels and noir thrillers. This story is off to a rousing start and I hope you can jump on it too. And Chris will be at ITHACON in two weekends, and it will be nice to get him to sign my copies!
Dizzying Heights – Geez, some guys will go to extremes to get a pretty blonde to hug them, won’t they? In this wonderful Gil Kane cover the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, it looks like Raven is rescuing a woman from someone who is either an evil bad-guy or just a really bad driver.
Paperback Hero – I’ve always liked Howard Chaykin’s work and followed him from project to project over the years. This one, Fargo (complete with a red cover, natch) reboots a paperback hero that I had never heard of. But …let’s not quibble about the details. At the end of the day, this book another enjoyable Chaykin romp.
Tank vs. Tree -How can you not fall in love with the Russ Heath war comic cover – with a tank smashing a tree. Talk about a sense of urgency. I can almost hear the clanking of the tank and the splitting of the timber. What a master Heath was. I still miss him.
Wanda by way of Syracuse – My wife bought this comic one day when I dragged her to a comic shop. She didn’t realize that the writer, Steve Orlando, is a local favorite as he grew up Syracuse. (We’re excited to host him as a guest at ITHACON next year, in fact). This lovely cover was a variant by Russell Dauterman.
That’s it for Red Covers this time around. But can I give a shout out to another comic-con this weekend? Chris Wildrick’s Geek/Art Confluence, held on the Syracuse University campus, is always a fantastic convention. I’ll be there and hope to see you there too!
