When new “Indie” creator-owned comics hit the shelves, the guarantee of more than a first arc is often dependent on sales and critical acclaim. Therefore, it is always good news to hear that a series that you enjoyed is getting a shot at a second arc. There has been some recent news with three properties that are on there way back to production, and all from different publishers. Check below for the details on Alice Never After, Black’s Myth: The Key to His Heart, and Dark Spaces: Good Deeds.
Alice Never After
One of our favorite series of 2022 is headed back with a new arc. Dan Panosian and Giorgio Spalleta are returning to Wonderland.
(April 18, 2023) – Dan Panosian (An Unkindness of Ravens) and Giorgio Spalleta’s (Magic) twisted take on Alice in Wonderland will continue to blur the lines between fantasy and reality this Summer in ALICE NEVER AFTER, only at BOOM! Studios.
Alice finally got her wish. Wonderland has become her new home, but with her abuser’s avatar with the uncanny grin turning the mad residents of a moonstruck world against her, she’s clawing for a little rationality amongst the chaos.
As Alice’s sister, Edith and her childhood friend Earl fight for a way to bring her back, Alice has to contend with whether or not her torment is due to her father, herself, or maybe a curious combination of both…
“Following Alice down the rabbit hole is one thing, but getting out is harder than it looks! Ask Alice – she’s stuck there – PERMANENTLY! Join Giorgio, Francesco and I on a little trip to Wonderland… Bring some tea, we’ll provide the mushrooms and madness!” said writer Dan Panosian.
“Dan pushed me back down the rabbit hole! It’s great to get lost in Wonderland again, I think I’ll stay there,” said artist Giorgio Spalleta.
ALICE NEVER AFTER features covers by Dan Panosian, Jenny Frison (Wonder Woman), and InHyuk Lee (Alien).
“I’m so happy Dan and Giorgio wanted to come back to their weird and macabre Wonderland. They’re having a ton of fun with how they’re approaching the story and injecting it with some more thematically heavy elements that build off the first series beautifully. Readers are going to be ecstatically surprised by what madness they have in store,” said supervising editor Bryce Carlson.
ALICE NEVER AFTER will be available in comic shops July 2023. It is available for pre-order at your local comic shop. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Kindle.
Black’s Myth: The Key to His Heart
Black’s Myth has flown under the radar, but it is one of the best books that Ahoy Comics has published and that is saying quite a bit. We are super excited to see this book coming back soon. Make sure you tell your LCS that you want it.
(April 20, 2023) The acclaimed punk rock horror series BLACK’S MYTH by writer Eric Palicki (Atlantis Wasn’t Built For Tourists), artist Wendell Cavalcanti (BlackAcre), and superstar cover artist Liana Kangas (Trve Kvlt, She Said Destroy) is returning this summer with an all-new mini-series from AHOY Comics. The critically acclaimed comic features werewolf PI Janie Jones “Strummer” Mercado and her charming djinn assistant Ben Si’lat solving crimes in the “supernatural underground” thriving in Los Angeles. BLACK’S MYTH: THE KEY TO HIS HEART debuts in June, with an incentive cover by Tim Seeley.

“I’ve made a terrible mistake, and I don’t just mean pursuing a career in comics!” said writer Eric Palicki. “How can we continue calling our book Black’s Myth unless Strummer once again finds herself in the orbit of her enigmatic client-turned-nemesis Rainsford Black? Hopefully, Volume Two reveals Mister Black to be a little less mysterious and perhaps a tad more sympathetic, as Wendell and I build on the unanswered questions of the first volume while also delivering a new mystery for Strums and Ben to unravel.”
In her latest case, werewolf private eye Janie Jones “Strummer” Mercado tries to prevent a young girl from becoming a monster with the aid of her suave djinn assistant, Ben Si’lat. But will Strummer gain an intern instead? And why is an old enemy sending mysterious packages to her house?
“I’ve always loved werewolves, but I never thought I’d be working on a werewolf comic series,” said artist Wendell Cavalcanti. “And here I am for the second time (wow!), in a supernatural Los Angeles where I can draw werewolves, vampires, djinns, witches, and The Minotaur (there is only one). It’s exciting to show a little more of these characters. I can only say thank you very much to all of you.”
BLACK’S MYTH: THE KEY TO HIS HEARTwill be published monthly by AHOY Comics, with the first issue hitting stores on June 21, 2023, for $3.99. Like all AHOY titles, it will feature extra prose stories and illustrations.
Dark Spaces: Good Deeds
IDW Publishing is bringing the next installment in the Dark Spaces anthology to readers next month.
Each entry in the Dark Spaces series is a fully contained, character-driven, standalone story featuring a different up-and-coming artist and promising young writer handpicked by the legendary Scott Snyder. The anthology kicked off last year with Dark Spaces: Wildfire, and this newest addition, Dark Spaces: Good Deeds is written by filmmaker and author, Che Grayson (known for Batman: Urban Legends) and art by Kelsey Ramsay (Joan Jett & the Blackhearts). Full of mysterious dark secrets in need of unraveling, issue #1 will have readers itching for more when it hits shelves on May 17th!
Dark Spaces: Good Deeds follows a mother, Rebecca, and her teenage daughter Cheyenne after they move to the historic town of St. Augustine, Florida.
